An introduction to the encaustic process

In this two day encaustic workshop you will be introduced to the encaustic process and the myriad of possibilities it holds, explore some of my favorite techniques and learn ways to incorporate these encaustic techniques into your work. You will be shown how to incorporate found and personal images into your work through collage and how to enhance your work with image transfer. Creating sumptuous surfaces and texture, exploring mark-making techniques, wax application, incising and inlaying. Encaustics will open up new avenues for exploring and developing new approaches to your work. Explore color and creating depth through use of pigmented wax, glazing techniques, tar paint and metallics and leaf.

We will also discuss ways that you can begin to incorporate encaustics into your work and studio. During the workshop we will discuss studio set up, tools of the trade and studio safety.

The possibilities are endless. Participants are encouraged to bring ephemera, old and handmade papers, and copies of photos, old and new to personalize their work. Suggestion list will be sent upon registration including recommendations of additional items you may want to have on hand for the class.

West Coast Nest

Build your own beautiful encaustic nest painting. 

All skill levels are welcome to come and create in this one day workshop.

After a brief discussion on encaustics, you will be guided through the process of building your own beautiful encaustic nest painting. Together we will begin by creating a lush wax background and then spend the afternoon having fun further exploring a variety of encaustic mark making techniques, building up layers of encaustic paint, creating depth and structure around the eggs nestled in your nest.

You will finish your piece by hand rubbing additional colours into the textured surface and further embellishing with a hint of gold or copper powder.

All supplies are included.

Create an encaustic heart panel using beeswax medium, pigment sticks and panpastels.

Participants will explore a variety of encaustic techniques to create a unique personalized panel. Once the encaustic medium is applied to the board, colour will be deepened by adding additional layers to create depth and interest. Panel will be incised and enhanced and finished with pigment stick and metallic powders. Sound overwhelming? Don’t fret. We will walk you through it step by step.

Suitable for all levels from beginners to experienced artists.

BIRCH TREE Encaustic

create a one-of-a-kind birch tree encaustic painting

In this 2 day workshop, you will be guided through the process of creating a one-of-a-kind birch tree encaustic painting. We will begin the first day working directly on our boards and then begin the process of building up layers of wax and pigmented wax to create depth and texture. On the second day we will continue to work in wax and then fine-tune our design and create further detail. Some of the techniques we will be covering include; glazing, painting and colour mixing, graffito, accretion, working with oil paints and pigment sticks.

floral still life

Create a floral painting with encaustics

Working in encaustics, we will create a floral painting from a still life in the studio. Participants will learn to work in the moment, ways to capture light, create depth and to translate the flowers onto the surface. Each piece will be as unique as its creator.

Suitable for those with some encaustic experience. Students will bring their own supplies and boards. It is recommended you come to the first day with your surface primed.

Abstract in encaustic

Explore and develop new abstract approaches

In this workshop you will create sumptuous surfaces and texture, including visual and physical texture, explore mark-making techniques, wax applications, incising and inlaying. Open to those who are taking, or have taken, classes with us in the past. Open Studio fosters connection and learning with others taking our encaustic classes. As well, Open Studio allows for in-depth/ additional time to work on your encaustic work.

encaustic paint Workshop

learn how to Create encaustic paints.

Encaustic painting is one of the oldest forms of painting. There is nothing equal to the surface of an encaustic painting; radiant pigments suspended in layers of luminous layers wax create a painting like no other.
During this one day workshop participants will learn the subtle art of creating beautiful encaustic paints, how to successfully merge wax and colour, how to create and customize luscious encaustic colours that will set your work apart. we will also discuss the use of metallic and interference pigments in our paints and the roll they might take.
Participants will come away with a better understanding of colour and each colours properties, 20+ encaustic paint cakes and the recipes to make them again.
The colours created in each workshop always vary. You are encouraged to come with 3 or 4 ideas of paint colours you would like to create.

Encaustic Collage

Using collage, beeswax, whimsy and fun we will transform an image of man’s best friend, the king of the beasts or the average gal into an encaustic iconic image. What kind of icon? A mythical goddess? What ever works for you….fido floating through space, helmet et al from a verse of “Space man” or “Life on Mars”. Maybe a elk gussied up like a woodland fairy? A Zebra with a halo? Why not.

We will go over design and ideas in class. We will have some images on hand too. Some of the techniques covered include; working larger, creating atmospheric background through colour mixing, glazing, collage, embedding images, image transfer, incising, working with a stylus, metallics, enhancing colour with the use of pigment sticks, pan pastel, tar paint and oil paint.

Come to workshop with your board primed if you would like to do this in the studio.

Photo Encaustic - with a twist!

A two day encaustic workshop exploring personal imagery and the possibilities with wax. Learn ways to create luminous images through the encaustic process. Some of the processes we will investigate; photographs and wax, image transfer, image on watercolour, watercolours and wax, the printed image, image and fabric, hand-tinted photos, drawn images and wax. We will also discover ways to further enhance and develop images and drawing, expanding ideas and ways to incorporate your own hand-made marks.

Encaustic Burn Exploration

Burn, baby burn…explorE a variety of encaustic burn techniques.

On the first day we will explore techniques on smaller boards and on the second day, we will create a larger piece using techniques covered on the first day. Burns can be the main focus of a piece or they can be an exciting element of your art work. Burns can be used to create significant drama in your work. Some of the techniques we will be covering include: use of shellacs, various ways of pigmenting shellac, wet and dry burns, wood burns, wood glue burns, encaustic accretion and shellac techniques.

Our classes often sell out. Consequently registration is only confirmed upon payment in full and not through email correspondence or other communications with our studio.


30 days prior to the start of a class, a refund of 100% of the total amount will be refunded, less a $50 admin fee.
15 days prior to the start of a class, a refund of 50% of the total amount will be refunded, less a $50 admin fee.
No refund will be offered 14 days prior to the class start date.

If a workshop is cancelled for any reason by The Crow’s Nest Art Studio a full refund or alternative date will be offered. The Crow’s Nest Art Studio is not responsible for any travel related fees or expenses if your workshop is cancelled.


Missed classes are non-refundable and non transferable.


Participants hold The Crow’s Nest Art Studio and owner Megan MacDonald free from any liability in the event of loss or accidental injury.
